When investigated in Arabic, literal translations of the terms FORMALISM and FORMALIST do not distinguish between an adherence to form/ system versus a preoccupation with form/ system. The translation yielded in Amman attempts to substitute, what is essentially a colloquial term into a descriptor which denotes a preoccupation with aesthetic, and can be applied to both the principles of FORMALISM and the FORMALIST agent themselves.

Participants yielded a translation by substituting the term with another in the Arabic language having the same meaning (which occurs when a Source Text word does not exist in the Target Language).
